Today I spent a very enjoyable morning with BBC Sussex reporter Paul Sawtell, who is taking up a new challenge each day this week as part of the UK wide GET CREATIVE festival.
His challenge was to learn to sing acappella (unaccompanied) in 10 minutes and so, along with Brighton Vox Community Choir member Jo, we attempted the popular song ‘Human’ written by Sussex born and bred singer Rag ‘n’ bone man.
After a quick rehearsal where we discovered that, as well as being able to pitch a note quite well, Paul has a very pleasant sounding voice, we went live on air……
You can hear the whole interview by clicking on the image below (skip to 2 hours 42 minutes 15 seconds to hear the relevant section).
Judge for yourself how well he got on!
The smile on Paul’s face slowly but surely widened as he started to feel those ‘feel-good endorphins’ that our body naturally produces when we sing. And the fact that we made a few mistakes along the way, just added to the sense of fun.
So if you fancy having a go yourself, come along to our free open session, this Wednesday 21st March to the Phoenix Community centre in Brighton at 7.30pm to join Brighton Vox Choir.
Believe me it won’t be as scary as it was for Paul, because you’ll have a whole group of friendly singers to join you. And we even throw in a cup of tea and a biscuit for good measure.
