1:1 Singing Lessons COVID-19 Update

Adapting to the challenges of Lockdown and Isolation

In early March 2020 when the news about Corona Virus hit the world I decided to move all my individual lessons online .  It quickly became clear that singing is one of the most risky activities when it comes to spreading the virus and therefore the decision to stop all my face to face individual lessons, groups and choirs was important for the well-being of myself and students alike.

Switching to Online Lessons

At first I was not sure how easy it would be to make the switch to online lessons, via Skype, Zoom or Microsoft Teams. In fact I have been very pleasantly surprised about how well these have been going! I teach all ages, from children as young as 5 years old, up to adults and even the very youngest students have adjusted amazingly well.

How does an Online Lesson work?

One of the main differences using an online platform is that listening skills must be more carefully employed. Often when teaching face to face  it is easy, as a teacher,  to jump in and demonstrate, or sing/play along, when a student is first learning a piece or a technical exercise. With online lessons it works better, due to the time lag, to work in a call-and-response way; this encourages better listening skills. I have found that students are also  developing much better self-correction and critical skills regarding their own voices.

How much do lessons cost?

Fees are £18 per 30 minutes/£24 45 minutes/ £30 1 hour for individuals.

I ask that you pay £5 when booking your 'Taster session' and this will be discounted off the first lesson.

Piano lessons

These are available for beginners of all ages and they offer a fantastic opportunity to work on all aspects of learning basic keyboard skills; technical ability, music theory, reading music and combining this with  singing too if you want to. I am happy to teach up to grade 4/5 level on keyboard or piano.

The style and format of the lessons can be decided according  to your requirements; some students simply want to play songs for fun, and don't wish to learn the theory of music or take formal exams; others want to start from scratch learning to read music and taking theory exams alongside the performance ones. It isn't necesary to have a full sized keyboard or classical piano to start learning (though you may find as you improve you will want to get one); a small electronic keyboard is fine for a start.

Students can be prepared for ABRSM or Trinity (Classical or Rock and Pop) music exams on piano or singing, including the LAMDA musical theatre syllabus (currently up to grade 3) or The Trinity Rock and Pop exam.

Fees are £18 per 30 minutes/£24 45 minutes/ £30 1 hour for individuals.

What can I offer?

I offer tailored individual lessons to suit your preferences; these can be up to an hour and are for all ages and abilities.  I will guide you to sing appropriate material, while taking account of the genres and types of songs  you like to sing. There are different styles and techniques that we can work on, depending on whether your prefer to sing traditional songs, pop music, classical or musical theatre styles (or a mix of these!)
